Update 2: Time’s up. All “free links” are taken. The best way to get a link now is to comment on my posts and try to get on the “Top Commentators” list. If I start getting enough comments I will expand the list from five links to ten.
Update: I have added a Top Commenter’s section on the sidebar. If you leave a comment on a post as well as enter a valid link to your site, you might just show up. This will allow top commenter’s to get link-backs. If people start posting comment spam just to make the list I will block you. I hope this can be a happy-medium between having to limit my Links page.
Due to the overwhelming popularity (big surprise to me) of my linkback program I have to do something I didn’t think I would ever have to do. I need to put a cap on the number of people I put on my Links page.
This is for two reasons:
1) Because of the way I have set up my links page - screenshots and all - it uses a lot of bandwidth. The page is getting a lot of views which is great, but if I ended up with 1000 links it would take forever to load and use megabytes of bandwidth each time someone wanted to view it.
2) My site is growing much faster than expected. If I gave a linked everyone that asked, it could, in my opinion, lower the integrity of my site by providing links to some bad material. Getting a link on my site has been bringing in quite a bit of traffic for other people so as the popularity of my site increases so does the benefit of having a link on my page. One person told me the traffic actually crashed their site. I doubt it, but that’s what he said.
F or the reasons listed above I am going to institute a cap on the number of “free links” I give. Again, I am sorry to do this but I never expected to get this kind of response. I want to help the blogger community as much as possible, but I also don’t want to harm my site in the process. I am putting the cap on “free links” at 35. I have 20 up right now and I have 6 to add. That leaves 9 spots. If you want a link-back you might want to hurry.
